In reality he’s trying to use that to mask the illusion magic he’s drawing out. His real plan is to lean down quick as he can while Riku might be distracted, and tap his shoulder with a Cure for the ice shard mixed with warm thoughts of Castor, Pollux, and Sora to push away more shards - at least for a bit.
